The short answer

How does Microsoft Teams Phone work?

Teams Phone is Microsoft's cloud phone system inside Teams. Each user needs a Teams Phone license, and the business needs a way to connect calls to the public phone network. Microsoft offers four: a Microsoft Calling Plan, Operator Connect through a certified carrier, Teams Phone Mobile through a certified mobile carrier, and Direct Routing through any carrier using a session border controller. You can mix them.

What Teams Phone costs

Microsoft lists Teams Phone Standard at $10 per user per month on an annual subscription, and it requires a separate Teams license. For users in the US, Microsoft also sells Teams Phone with a Calling Plan at $17 per user per month, which includes 3,000 outbound domestic minutes, and a pay as you go version at $13. These are Microsoft list prices as of October 2026 and they change over time. Carrier pricing for Operator Connect and Direct Routing varies, which is where a comparison pays off.

What licenses do we need for Teams calling?

Each user needs Microsoft Teams plus a Teams Phone license. Microsoft 365 E5 includes Teams Phone. Other plans add it as Teams Phone Standard or as a bundle with a Microsoft Calling Plan. You also need phone service from Microsoft or a carrier, and shared devices such as lobby phones use a Teams Shared Devices license.

Calling Plan, Operator Connect or Direct Routing: which is best?

Calling Plans are the simplest for small teams. Operator Connect lets you pick a certified carrier, with that carrier's pricing, support and calling features, while you still manage everything in the Teams admin center. Direct Routing is for businesses that need a specific carrier, existing phone equipment or complex routing. It requires a session border controller, which can be hosted for you.

How do we move our existing numbers into Teams?

Through a port, the same process used to move numbers between carriers. We collect a recent bill and the account details your current carrier needs, schedule the cutover and test every number. FCC rules require simple ports to be processed in one business day. Larger or complex ports take longer, so we plan the date with room to spare.

Do we need desk phones?

No. Teams calling works on computers and cell phones. Many businesses still use certified desk phones at front desks and in warehouses, conference phones in meeting rooms and headsets for people who are on calls all day.

How does 911 work with Teams?

You set an emergency address for each location, and Teams can detect where a user is calling from on your network. Federal rules require business phone systems to let anyone dial 911 directly and to send a location responders can find. We set this up for every site and for people who work from home.

Can Teams replace our contact center?

For simple call queues, yes. Teams Phone includes auto attendants and call queues. Teams that need advanced routing, wallboards, workforce tools or service across chat and text connect a certified contact center platform to Teams, and we compare those too.

Keep your 816 and 913 numbers

Your local numbers are part of your brand. Whether your office is on the Missouri side with an 816 number, in Johnson County with a 913 number or in St. Joseph, we move them into Teams and make sure every location has the right emergency address. Remote staff across Missouri and Kansas get the same setup.
