A local fiber company
Rainbow Communications is a northeast Kansas telecom company headquartered in Everest, with offices in Atchison and Hiawatha. Its roots go back to a first annual meeting in Everest in 1953. On the FCC map, Rainbow reports fiber at about 95 percent of Atchison locations, with speeds up to 2 Gbps in both directions.
For most Atchison businesses, Rainbow fiber is the main line to beat. Vyve cable advertises fast downloads but only about 50 Mbps upload, which can limit cloud phones, video calls and offsite backups. AT&T only reports DSL here.
Gigabit fixed wireless as a real backup
Nextlink, a fixed wireless company that serves rural parts of Kansas and neighboring states, reports coverage at 99 percent of Atchison locations with speeds up to 1 Gbps download and 500 Mbps upload. That is unusually fast for wireless, and it runs on a completely separate network from Rainbow’s fiber and Vyve’s cable. Paired with automatic failover, it makes a strong backup connection.
Mercury Fiber and KWIKOM also report wide fixed wireless coverage, and T-Mobile and Verizon report 5G across town.
Manufacturers, the college and Main Street
Atchison’s employers range from MGP Ingredients, headquartered here, to Benedictine College and the small businesses downtown. Industrial Road Business Park, the city’s oldest industrial park, has long-standing tenants including rail services and a community college. Larger sites may want dedicated internet with a service level agreement, and anyone still on copper alarm or fax lines should look at POTS line replacement.
About the provider data. The network list on this page comes from the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection (availability as of December 2025). The FCC counts a provider as available in an area when it reports it can serve locations there, so a network on the map may still need to build to your building. We check each one at your address before you compare prices.
